The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has started a multi-year R&D project to find new ways to document and measure changes in nature and ecosystems. We have chosen Multiconsult together with the Norwegian Institute for Natural Research (NINA) to assist in the work. The purpose is to develop new tools and methods for environmental management of transport projects. We will not only find new innovative ways to measure ecosystem changes, but also investigate whether there are unused opportunities in the data and tools that have been developed by environmental management over the past five years. In recent years, various “scoring systems” have been introduced which make it possible to quantify e.g. the sustainability work of a project (BREEM Infrastructure) or a value for biological diversity (Biodiversity Metrics). The Norwegian Public Roads Administration also has other projects on natural neutrality and environmental management. e have also investigated the possibilities of building nature-neutral road sections. The project is an assignment from the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and includes developing a method that can be used to measure natural neutrality and to create an account that shows achieved natural neutrality in projects.
